CLASS SUMMARY:

Incumbents are responsible for providing instructional assistance to children who are in a program for emotional and behavioral problems or are in the alternative education classroom.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Behavioral Technician is a stand-alone classification.  The Behavioral Technician is distinguished from other classifications by its responsibility for assisting children with emotional and behavioral problems.

Assists in developing and administering educational programs for behaviorally or academically challenged children; may assist in grading, recording, and averaging papers and/or scores.

Escorts children to the bus, time-out, the nurse’s office, and/or across campus.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

  • Child development concepts and practices;
  • Disciplinary practices and procedures within an educational setting;
  • Behavior modification techniques;
  • Safety procedures and guidelines;
  • Applicable Federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Skills (position requirements at entry):

Skill in:

  • Monitoring and disciplining children;
  • Observing and assessing children;
  • Managing the behavior of children;
  • Escorting students across campus;
  • Working with academically or emotionally challenged children;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.), and two years of experience working with academically or emotionally challenged children, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, lifting, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

 

Incumbents may be subjected to blood and other bodily fluids and extreme temperatures.

 

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
